In Motion On Maintenance

Our Big Old Gymnasium!

It’s a space larger than many schools in the UK, but it is open to the elements (including salty sea air!). It provides shade and shelter from tropical sun and rain, all year round. Taking care of the gymnasium at The University of Life is paramount to the safety of our children and staff.

In July we used the school holidays to complete safety checks and restore parts which were rusted. Several panels on the roof were replaced to prevent leaks and gutters were installed to help divert the heavy rains from flood prone areas.

Silvia

Last issue we shared with you that Silvia was recovering from an operation. Please keep her in your prayers as she has now also had a cancer diagnosis. She is undergoing chemotherapy and will be away from The University of Life for the next few months.

Children in alleyway in the slums

In Motion During The Holidays

Summer holidays are not as fun for our children as they are in the UK. Instead of special activities, day trips and family holidays, children living in the slums are often left alone during the day while their parents or grandparents continue to work.

This puts them at risk, either stuck inside dark, damp homes or on the streets subject to the hands of local gangs, drugs, abuse and prostitution.

For the second year running we ran a holiday club in the last week of July, offering some support to families facing difficult choices during the school holidays.

Our students enjoyed workshops in K pop and drama, and a special guest speaker who came for the day to talk about how to evangelise at school.

The topics included how to present the Gospel creatively, in unity, and with empathy. We are so proud of our older students who are stretching their faith and learning how to lead.

Will’s Story

Will is in year 8. He is a student we all know, but not necessarily for the right reasons! A year ago, his teachers often had to discipline him because he would make hurtful comments to his fellow students.

However, recently things began to change. It started with one of our financial education classes. The teacher spoke of investing, growing, and generating profits. When Will was asked to give an example, he talked about planting seeds to sell the fruit.

The teacher leaned in and said. “Were you not just ridiculing your classmate whose mother sells herbs on a bike? Don’t you think she is doing exactly what you just suggested?”

Something stirred deeply in Will’s heart. As the truth struck deep, he whispered, “Wow! Teacher, I guess I was.” From that day, Will began to change. He has slowly become more of a mentor to his friends instead of a bully.

We are delighted that Will’s character is changing for the better. The perseverance of his teachers and your prayers for students like him, have been answered. Thank you.
